Welcome to Stash-It Dunedin: Over 30 Years Experience in Self Storage > Safe and Secure

Facility Rules

Important information for all facility users. Please familiarise yourself with these rules and safety guidelines so everyone has a safe and pleasant experience at our facility.

What you can't store

Food of any kind is not allowed — perishable or packaged. Food attracts vermin and mould, and it endangers other customers' goods. Don't store it.

Your licence agreement defines prohibited goods as anything hazardous, dangerous, illegal, stolen, flammable, explosive, environmentally harmful, perishable or living — or anything that can pose a risk to any person or property. In plain language, that means:

  • Food of any kind — perishable or packaged
  • Flammables and explosives — petrol, gas bottles, paint, solvents, fireworks
  • Chemicals and hazardous substances — chlorine, acids, poisons
  • Illegal, stolen or regulated items — including firearms and ammunition
  • Living things — plants and animals
  • Anything that leaks or has a strong odour — spillage and smells spread damage to other units
  • Lithium-ion batteries, or anything containing one — see below

Batteries: remove them before you store

Any item containing a lithium-ion battery is prohibited — that includes ebikes, scooters, power tools, cordless lawnmowers and appliances with built-in batteries. If the battery can be removed, take it out and keep it with you; the item can then be stored. Anything with a non-removable lithium-ion battery can't be stored at all.

Leave valuables and irreplaceable items out too. Under the licence, currency, jewellery, precious metals, furs, deeds, paintings, artwork, photographs and items of personal sentimental value can't be stored unless they're itemised and covered by specific insurance — the same applies to anything worth more than NZ$1,000 in total. Documents containing personal information aren't allowed either.

Your agreement, in plain language

Three things worth knowing before you sign.

Your responsibility

  • Your goods must be dry, reasonably clean, and free of vermin, mould and food scraps.
  • You access and use your space at your own risk.
  • The risk of theft, and of damage from mildew, mould, temperature changes, infestations and spillage from other spaces, sits with you as the storer.
  • We don't insure your goods and we don't sell insurance —arrange your own contents cover before you store.
  • If your goods damage the facility or another storer's property, you're responsible for putting it right.
  • Under the licence, our liability for loss of or damage to your goods is capped at NZ$1,000.
  • Your space is for storage only — no living, sleeping, business or nuisance.

Access & surveillance

  • We may access and inspect your space with14 days' written notice — you're welcome to be present — for maintenance, repairs or relocation.
  • We may enter immediately, without notice, where the law requires it, we suspect a breach of the agreement, your goods threaten harm to people, property or the environment, or our insurance requires it.
  • Common areas may be under continuous CCTV and audio surveillance, with signage.

Termination & defaults

  • After the fixed period, either party can end the agreement with the required written notice — the exact period is set out in your agreement.
  • If your account falls into default, we maypadlock your unit and deny access until it's sorted.
  • After a minimum of 42 days in default, and with at least 14 days' written notice, we may sell the goods to recover the fees owed — any balance is returned to you.
  • When your agreement ends, clear your goods and leave the space clean within 24 hours.
  • Goods left behind may be disposed of with 7 days' written notice.

Safety at a glance

Drive slowly (10 km/h max), supervise children at all times, keep dogs controlled, don't block driveways, and be aware of hazards including moving vehicles, electric fencing and lifting equipment.

Vehicle & traffic rules

  • Maximum speed: 10 km/h throughout the entire facility, including driveways, access roads and parking areas. Please drive slowly and carefully.
  • Parking: don't block driveways, access lanes or emergency exits
  • Loading zones: use designated loading areas only
  • Reversing: take extreme care — use a spotter if you can
  • Right of way: pedestrians always have right of way
  • Vehicle condition: keep your vehicle roadworthy and make sure it won't leak fluids

Children & dogs

Children

  • Direct supervision: children under 16 must be directly supervised by an adult at all times, within sight and reach
  • Age restrictions: children under 16 are not permitted to access storage units unaccompanied
  • Play areas: the facility is not a playground — keep children away from equipment and vehicles
  • Safety education: explain the facility's hazards to children before visiting

Dogs

  • Leash requirement: all dogs must be on a leash at all times or contained within your vehicle. You love your dog — others may not, and your dog won't love the electric fence!
  • Clean up: owners must clean up any mess immediately

Equipment & lifting safety

Supplied trolleys and lifting aids are provided as a convenience but are used entirely at your own risk. Inspect equipment before use.

  • Trolley inspection: check wheels, handles and load capacity before use
  • Weight limits: don't exceed equipment weight ratings
  • Equipment return: return all equipment to its designated area
  • Damage reporting: report damaged equipment immediately

Safety hazards & warnings

  • Moving vehicles: always be alert for moving vehicles and machinery
  • Electric fencing: the perimeter fence is electrified — don't touch or tamper
  • Lifting: heavy items can cause injury — use proper lifting technique
  • Falls from heights: be careful when stacking items or using elevated storage
  • Sharp objects: watch metal edges and sharp corners
  • Weather: take extra care in wet or icy conditions
  • Lighting: use extra lighting in dimly lit areas

General facility conduct

  • Noise: keep noise to a minimum, especially during early morning and evening hours
  • Abusive behaviour: abuse of any sort is not tolerated. If you have a problem with a fellow storer that can't be sorted out with a friendly chat, talk to us rather than having an altercation.
  • Prohibited items: no hazardous, dangerous, illegal, stolen, flammable, explosive, environmentally harmful, perishable or living items, or anything that can pose a risk to any person or property
  • Cleanliness: keep common areas clean and take your rubbish with you when you leave
  • Smoking: the facility is smoke-free — no smoking anywhere on the premises
  • Alcohol and drugs: no consumption of alcohol or illegal substances on site
  • Unit security: always lock your unit when you leave
  • Gate access: only allow access to people you know and trust
  • Insurance: arrange contents insurance for your stored items

In case of emergency, call 111. For facility-related issues, contact Marcus on 03 244 8235.

  • Medical emergency: call 111 immediately, then notify facility management
